Turtle Trackers of Hilton Head Island are proud to announce the three 2026 Recipients of the Turtle Trackers – Linda Zambelli Family Foundation Scholarship.
Elizabeth Markowitz of Hilton Head Island High School, Rebecca Wohn of Bluffton High School and Margaret Brown of Beaufort High School were recently all surprised at their respective schools Award Nights Program as the recipients of $1500 scholarships from the Turtle Trackers – Linda Zambelli Family Foundation Scholarship.
Elizabeth Markowitz, Valedictorian of her graduating class, plans to attend Dartmouth College this Fall, stating her long-term goal is to become an environmental defense attorney. She plans to engage in studying Environmental Law. During her last two years at Hilton Head High Elizabeth established and maintained a student-run recycling program across the school, while she also founded and lead the Student Environmental Club.
Rebecca Wohn is 3rd in her graduating class at Bluffton High School and will be entering Clemson University in the Fall where she is interested in scientific research, particularly in environmental and organic chemistry. Through her undergraduate research, Rebecca hopes to deepen her understanding of environmental and pharmaceutical chemistry, ultimately seeking solutions that benefit both science and humanity.
Rebecca is also a fluent Spanish speaker. Having taken 4 years of Spanish, she has passed the Spanish Biliteracy Test and obtained the Seal of Biliteracy. In doing this Rebecca believes that she can overcome challenges she once thought were beyond her and build a broader sense of community through language.
Margaret Brown is 3rd in her class at Beaufort High School and plans to enter the University of Pennsylvania in the Fall where she plans to study neuroscience while following her passion of environmental awareness through the Penn Environmental Group.
Margaret is proud of the school newspaper that she founded at Beaufort High School. Having lost a Student Council Election, she decided to start a student paper so that more students knew about all that was going on at the school, like elections, and hopefully more students would participate. That effort was a huge success and continues today as a communicating tool at Beaufort High.
A special thanks goes to Turtle Trackers Ed Ladd, Lisa Pianti, Lori O’Neill, Lynette Shields, and Jackie Rosswurm, along with Peter Zambelli, for serving on the committee to develop the Turtle Tracker Linda Zambelli Family Foundation and handle the entire process through this first year.
